A "best practices" when creating aliases within your metadata repository is to do the renaming within the business layer, not the presentation layer. This allows you to create more than one subject area off of the business layer, for example, to have one subject areas that is used by finance, another by HR, and another by marketing, each containing elements pertinent to their part of the business, and elements across the business, all built from the single business layer. Then, if you ever rename or alias an existing object, you've only had to change it in a single place, and it cascades across all subject areas that use it.
